Following a major transition after the departure of the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United have been fairly dormant in the premier league. After the disastrous season against David Moyes and the two mediocre campaigns under Louis Van Gaal, Mourinho’s reign was much awaited. His first move was to bring the Swedish phenom to Old Trafford to spearhead the attack of the red devils. Even at the age of 35, Zlatan Ibrahimovic remains a potent striker who strikes fear at the heart of defenders. The move was very well received by the fans of the club who were excited to see this man sporting their colours . Zlatan arrived in style by scoring a bicycle kick goal against Galatasaray in a pre season friendly. The striker went on to have an excellent preseason readying himself for the tough task of the premier league.

Zlatan made his premier league debut against Bournemouth and ended up scoring in that game and successfully lead the side to a win. This was followed by his brilliant brace against Southampton in the next game. Zlatan continued to perform by creating plays and dominanting oppositions with his mere presence on the field. Scoring goals against the big teams like Liverpool, rivals Manchester City  and Everton, zlatan had an impressive season for United. Zlatan formed some sort of partnership with Paul Pogba, who was another new signing for the club. Both of them seem to have a good understanding when it came to creating plays and opening up the opposition.

After making 27 appearances for United in the premier league, zlatan has 17 goals and 5 assists. He has had 46 shots on target and has completed 767 passes throughout the season. In the Europa league of the 12 games he has played he has 5 goals including a hat trick against French side Santa Etienne and 5 assists. With 6 goals and 2 assists in other competitions like the fa cup and the community shield, zlatan’s overall goal tally for United is 28 of 46 appearances which is quite impressive. Unfortunately Zlatan could have played his last match for United as he picked up an injury rupturing his cruciate ligament against Anderlecht, sidelining him out of the game for a minimum of 8 months. With his contract terminating at the end of this season and the fact that he is wanted by MLS teams we may not see him play for united again which has definitely put the club’s top four hopes in a state of uncertainty. Fans do hope he signs a contract extension.
