Having already been depleted due to injuries to several key players like Udanta Singh, Bengaluru FC were relieved to learn on Tuesday that captain Sunil Chhetri has been declated fit for Wednesday’s crucial and final AFC Cup group stage match against Maldives’ Maziya FC.
“Yes, Chhetri is fully fit for tomorrow. Sunil had been undergoing workouts and training with the medical team, to recover from injury. We will see tomorrow. Let us see,” BFC Coach Albert Roca said to the reporters in the build up to the match at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium.
The Indian captain sustained a hamstring injury during the Federation Cup. Roca said that Chhetri has been working tirelessly with the medical team to make himself fit and available for Bengaluru’s must win clash against the Maldivian outfit.
Roca also added that CK Vineeth will also be available for selection as he looks to continue his great run of form. With Chhetri returning, the Kerala Blasters striker will look to score as many goals as he could and also demonstrate his creativity by creating opportunities for his teammates. His brace helped Bengaluru to win the Federation Cup, their fourth title in the four years of their existence.
Roca, however, revealed that Udanta is ruled out for tomorrow’s game. He hobbled out of the Federation Cup final against Mohun Bagan in Cuttack. Returning from their suspension from the title deciding clash in Cuttack will be Harmanjot Khabra and John Johnson. Roca’s men have a superior head to head record against their Maldivian foes, defeating them in all three matches they have played against them before.
A win for Bengaluru will take them level on points with Maziya with 12 but due to a better head-to-head record, the Blues will advance to the knockout stages of the competition. Maziya, who have four of their five AFC Cup group stage matches, only require a draw to qualify for the next round of the competition.
