The Ukrainian Elina Svitolina wins the Italian Open and claims a WTA Tour leading fourth title of the year. Elina claimed the victory against the World No 4 Simona Halep by 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. After this fantastic win, Elina carrying her good form ahead moves into the World Top Ten ranking.
On the other hand, French Open favourite Simona Halep suffered an injury, a heavy fall and ankle started to hamper. Elina taking full advantage of the situation won second two sets and secure her feat. Halep’s injury gave up a position of control to dramatically lose the Italian Open final.
Halep who won Madrid Open last week held an early advantage on Sunday initially and looked likely to extend her winning streak. But, she went on her ankle with a heavy fall on it at the end of the first set and from there on she was in constant pain. Even after falling a break down at the beginning of set two, Svitolina soon edged ahead to an outstanding victory in a one sided decider.
The Ukrainian has claimed four WTA Tour titles in 2017 and will lead the Race to Singapore. She also appears likely to be a contender at Roland Garros as there will be absence of players like Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova.
The world no. 4, Halep would hope that she has not sustained a significant damage to her ankle with just a week left for the main-draw where the action will begin in Paris.
Halep in the first set stormed into an early lead, which stormed the opponent and forced her to commit errors before ending the set 5-2. But it was Svitolina who made a comeback in the second set to level the match.
The turning point was when Halep then fell away badly on her right ankle in the final set. Eventually Svitolina made the decisive break and took second and third set to win the Italian Open.
