With a view to make India a force in the sporting world, the Sports Ministry on Monday pushed for selection of world’s best coaches and support staff for the athletes in the country, along with upgrade in the infrastructure for sports.

The meeting was held in New Delhi to review the preparations for three of the major upcoming tournaments for India – the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games for 2018 and the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. It was presided over by Sports Minister Vijay Goel and included officials from the Indian Olympic Association, Sports Authority of India, Olympic Task Force and Top Scheme Committee among other members present.

“Shri Goel stressed that the federations should bring best coaches and support staff to provide training to the athletes. Goel said that we should upgrade the sports infrastructure, spot talent at a very young age, monitor performance, promote school and university level games in a big way, utilize stadiums to their full potential and involve best available coaching academies in training of sportspersons” a statement read from Sports Ministry’s press release.

The day-long meeting was also attended by representatives from Laxmibai National Institute of Physical Education, ‘High Priority’ and ‘Priority’ sports disciplines and the national observers. Goel also added that the government and the ministry has taken positive steps to provide various kind of supports to the athletes and the sportsperson including increasing the financial assistance to the various national sports federations.

He also implored IOA to resolve disputes in the NSFs, organizing National games frequently and holding of multi-disciplinary mega events in the country. Goel also called for focus on games such as baseball, cycling and martial arts where India has yet to participate in the international events.

Some of the most respected, eminent players, coaches, officials from different national sports federations, IOA and members from the Sports Ministry made presentations in terms of different possible approaches to take for the upcoming mega events before finalizing on the same.
