Ronaldo began his senior club career playing for Sporting CP, before signing with Manchester United at the tender age of 18 in 2003. He helped United win FA cup, 3 successive Premier League titles, a Champions League title and a FIFA club World Club. He was the most expensive teenager when he moved to Manchester United from Sporting CP.

At 16, Ronaldo was promoted from Sporting’s youth team by first team manager Laszlo Boloni, who was impressed with his dribbling. He subsequently became the first player to play for the club’s U16, U17, U18, B team and the first team all within one season.

Ronaldo came to attention to Manchester United Manager Alex Ferguson in August 2003 when Sporting defeated United 3-1 at the Inauguration of Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon. His performance impressed Manchester United players so much that they urged Ferguson to sign him. Even Ferguson to whom Ronaldo considers his fatherly figure in football admitted during that time that  Ronaldo was one of the most exciting young player he had ever seen. Ronaldo thus moved to Manchester United becoming the most expensive teenager at that time.

Manchester United:

Ronaldo became Manchester United’s first ever Portuguese signing. His transfer fee was 12.24 million pounds which made him the most expensive teenager in English football. He requested for a 28 number T-shirt but Ferguson trusted him with the legendary 7 no jersey which was owned by George Best, Beckham, Cantona who are legends of the game. Ronaldo however left his own legacy on the number 7 t-shirt.

Debut for Ronaldo:

Cristiano Ronaldo made his Manchester United debut on August 16th 2003. He came on as substitute for Nicky Butt in the 60th minute of United’s Premier League encounter with Bolton Wanderers. With United leading 1-0, the future king of football arrived  with a standing ovation from the crowd at the Theatre of Dreams. United fans knew he was no ordinary kid and with him the future of Manchester United was secure. The excitement with which people welcomed him showed how much he was loved at Manchester and what expectations they had from the wonder kid.

Becoming the first Portuguese to play for United he sauntered onto the pitch wearing the famous number 7 t-shirt which was tucked out, had his hair gelled and bleached and opting full sleeves in August. There was something about the boy which left everybody’s jaw dropped for a long time. With only 30 mins remaining on the clock, you could forgive Bolton fullback Nicky Hunt for thinking he might have an easy task on his hand handling the 18 year old boy who is making his debut.

Ronaldo’s first contribution on the pitch included beating multiple defenders and drawing a penalty, sending inch- perfect crosses to Rudd Van Nistelrooy and dribbling past 5 Bolton defenders like a walk in the park. He was no ordinary kid. Ivan Campo cynically took down Ronaldo for which he even received yellow cards. Ronaldo gave Bolton defenders a very busy 30 minutes.

The Broadcaster couldn’t help but wonder about the quality of this boy and he heaped praises for the 18 year old. He even said “Dear me, he’s got it all.”

Ronaldo destroyed Ricardo Gardner with a flurry of step overs and sheer pace. Garnder retaliated moments later by bringing him down and receiving a yellow card. Ronaldo was not frightened by his physical treatment on his debut. He chose to step and delivered perfect ball from the resulting free-kick.

Ronaldo’s debut was all in all a sensational one. The fact that he turned a 30 minute performance to 6 minute individual highlight video of his individual performance says it all. George Best could not stop himself from heaping praise and hailed it as “undoubtedly the most exciting debut” he had ever seen.

Ronaldo then moved to Real Madrid in 2009 thereby becoming the most expensive player on planet during that time with transfer fee of 94 million pounds. He has won 2 La-liga titles, 2 Copa del Rey and 2 Champions League with Real Madrid. Ronaldo holds a record for most goals in a single Champions League season and even highest goal scorer in Champions League. He became fastest player to reach 200 La Liga goals. He is the only player in the history of football to score 50 goals in a season for 6 years consecutively. His list of breaking records are countless and he with hard work, determination and ambitions to continue to be renowned best player in the world will continue to do so.

Manchester United fans want Ronaldo to come back to theater of dreams and end his career here. They are still nostalgic about his free kicks and the important goals he scored for the red devils. Ronaldo too has always showed how much Manchester United means to him and a reunion will complete this beautiful love affair.
