Australia knocked out in the league stages for second time in a row.
England and Australia met each other in what was supposed to be a must win match for Australia to stay alive in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. After two rained out matches, Australia needed to win this against England.
Australia batted first after England won the toss. After Warner got out for 21 runs, Finch (68) and Smith (56) added 96 runs for second wicket. However, England took wickets at continuous intervals and Australia could never really get going.
Only Travis Head played some good innings, scoring 71 runs to take Australia past 270 runs. However, 4 wickets each for Mark Wood and Adil Rashid, caused a lower order collapse for Australia and they couldn’t take advantage of last 10 overs and Australia finished for 277/9.
England lost Jason Roy for 4, Hales for 0 and Root for 15 to find themselves 35/3. However, Captain Eoin Morgan (87) and Ben Stokes, who hit another century, along with Jos Buttler took England to 240/4 in 40 overs, before rains came down hard.
Finally the game was called off and Australia’s tournament ends here, with another disappointment.
AUS 277/9 (T Head 71; M Wood 4/33) lost to ENG (B Stokes 102; J Hazlewood 2/50 ) by 40 runs by DLS method.
