KL Rahul is confirmed to play at no.4 for India against Sri Lanka in ODI series.
KL Rahul made an impressive return to Team India in the Tests against Sri Lanka, making fifties in both the innings he got to bat in the two Tests he played. Now the focus shifts to the limited overs leg of the tour and Rahul has been confirmed to bat at no.4.
Rahul missed the entire of cricket season from February of 2017 to the time he made his return to the team. He has opened in all the six ODIs he has played so far, but it is impossible for him to bat at the top of the order, since Dhawan-Rohit combination rules the roost when it comes to opening.
They have been the most successful opening partnership since the last 3-4 years in the world and it won’t be wise to break them up. Virat Kohli, the Indian captain bats at no.3 and MS Dhoni bats at no.5 and the all-rounders and bowlers bat after him. So there is only one spot open for players to make their mark in the team and that is no.4.
Batting at no.4 is a very tricky situation. You have to be good against both pace and spin to bat at this position and should know how to work the singles and up the ante from time to time. Rahul is a designated opener, who is made to bat at no.4 and it will be interesting to see how he copes with the responsibility.
KL Rahul is a bit fidgety during the initial period of his innings and if he gets out early in a close situation or a high run chase, it might leave India in a tricky situation. It is better than Rahul is played at no.3 in Virat Kohli’s place or make a place for him in top order.
India has had many other players who have batted at this position and apart from Rahul, there are 3 other options to choose from in MS Dhoni, Ajinkya Rahane and Manish Pandey, currently in the squad.
