Honored with Arjuna Award in 2014, one of the finest Indian boxers Manoj Kumar has again proved himself by attaining triumph over Duryodhan Singh for his second successive gold at the National Boxing Championship.
Manoj was representing the Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSSB) whereas Singh was representing the Services Sports Control Board’s (SSCB). Haryana’s Manoj Kumar (69kg) out-punched his opponent and clinched his second National Championship Gold in a 4-1 decision. Last year in the South Asian Games held in Guwahati, Manoj Kumar won Gold in his weight category.
Shiva Thapa (60kg) wasn’t able to defend his title this time and lost to SSCB’s Manish Kaushik, settling for the silver medal in the lightweight (60kg) category. Shiva was competing for his home state Assam in the event.
In the 75kg middleweight category – Commonwealth Games silver-medallist Mandeep Jangra won his first ever National gold by beating Mizoram’s Vanhlimpuia 5-0.
In the 91kg+ Super Heavyweight category – SSCB’s Satish knocked Haryana’s Parvin Kumar 5-0 to hold the top honor.
Bantamweight 56kg category – SSCB’s Madan Lal bt Goa’s Santosh Harijan (3-2).
Light Welterweight 64kg category – Dheeraj Rangi bt Basant Thapa ( Basant wasn’t present at the match due to an injury and handed over a straight win to his opponent).
Heavyweight 91kg category – Haryana’s Naman bt Himachal’s Varinder Kumar 95-0)
52 kg category – Salman Sheikh bt Mizoram’s Laldinmawia
