Ashish Nehra’s 18 years of international cricket, that started back in 1999, when he made his Test debut under Mohammad Azharuddin, came to an end at his home ground in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Nehra had announced last month that this would be his farewell game and with selectors and the team complying, he was part of the XI that took the field against New Zealand in the first T20I.
India also broke the jinx against New Zealand as Nehra emotionally sent down the final ball of the match and his career, which sealed the match for India by 53 runs.
Before the match though, his team-mates took some time out from their warm-ups to honor the fast bowling legend.
Former captain MS Dhoni and current skipper Virat Kohli both presented Nehra a memento to mark his final appearance for India.
“Nineteen years as a fast bowler is a great achievement. One of the smartest guys I’ve played with always loves helping youngsters. He is someone who knew what to do in specific situations. Sad to see him go but it is happening at his home ground,” Kohli said.
At Nehra’s farewell party, Virat Kohli and Nehra’s close friend Virender Sehwag had a remarkable moment. Captain Kohli decorated Nehra’s face with cake. A video that surfaced on social media shows that Nehra was a bit emotional.
He offered a small piece of the cake to the Indian captain who initially refused to eat as he maintains a pretty strict diet but Nehra insisted and Kohli ate it. His former Delhi and India team-mate Sehwag also hugged and congratulated Nehra on his retirement from all forms of cricket.
