The Asian Airgun Shooting Championship which is taking place in Wako City, Japan saw an amazing start from the Indian side.
On the very first day of the tournament, India clinched five medals including a bronze from Ravi Kumar. However, Olympic bronze-medallist Gagan Narang missed out on an individual podium finish.
Ravi Kumar made the nation proud with a bronze in the men’s 10m air rifle category. Other winners of the first day bagged silver medals including Arjun Babuta’s silver in the corresponding junior men’s event.
Bronze medalist faced Olympic medalist Narang in the faceoff and secured the place on the podium with 225.7 points. However, the next match against China’s Yifei Cao went pretty harsh for him and conceived a defeat with 248.6 points.
Later, Arjun Babuta silver in junior men’s 10m Air Rifle event came as a big recognition for the Chandigarh shooter. The nail-biting finale between him and China’s Yukun Liu ended with a difference of 0.1 points. India also bagged three team silver medals in each of the three air rifle events.
It was a big heartbreaker for India as after going neck to neck with him over the last four shots, but eventually getting beaten 249.8-249.7.
The trio of Deepak Kumar, Ravi Kumar, and Gagan Narang combined to score a total of 1876.6 points in the men’s team event to finish second behind China. In the Women’s Team event, Anjum Moudgil, Meghana Sajjanar, and Pooja Ghatkar scored 1247 points to clinch the silver following the star of the event China who took the gold in this as well, with 1249.2 points.
The same shooting range will be used for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics shooting competitions and is a great practice session and motivation for the Indian participants to compete in this tournament.
